PIE offers a suite of workshops, designed for both novice evaluators, and those who are more experienced. Common offerings include the following:
Building an Evaluation System
for Nonprofits
This workshop will outline a how-to for building and improving nonprofit evaluation practice. It will focus on a specific process that organizational leaders and evaluators can leverage to understand their organization’s data, improve their current evaluation systems, and work toward data practices that are equitable and sustainable.
Data Collection Tools & Processes
This workshop will provide an overview of best practices for creating and implementing data tools. This includes designing surveys and interview/focus group protocols, as well as ways to streamline your data collection practices to increase response rates and elevate participant voice.
Ethics in Evaluation
This workshop supports a broad understanding of ethics in evaluation and addresses different approaches to ethical evaluation such as Culturally Responsive Evaluation, Equity-based Evaluations, and Trauma-informed Evaluation. During the workshop you will practice applying these approaches to a case study and consider how these approaches could inform your work.
Logic Modeling 101
This workshop will walk you through a collaborative brainstorming process to identify a program’s intended impacts, outcomes, outputs, and activities using a logic model framework. You will then use your logic model to create a work plan for your program and identify opportunities to integrate evaluation.
Outcome Mapping
This workshop will provide an overview of the importance of “starting with the end in mind” and mapping the outcomes of your program/organization. We will detail several ways to present and think about your outcomes, including common approaches such as logic models, theories of change, and their associated benefits and drawbacks. A mapping activity will model how you can build outcome maps at your organization.
Ripple Effect Mapping
This workshop will provide an overview of ripple effect mapping as a method to understand impact through shared ownership of data collection and meaning making with stakeholders. Consider ripple effect mapping if you are interested in an evaluation method that affirms the lived experiences of your stakeholders, encourages deep listening, supports relationship-building, and is customizable to meet your needs. In addition to creating a ripple effect map, you will also learn how to facilitate the process with your team.
Strategy 101
This workshop is an introduction to PIE’s approach to strategy planning which takes an iterative, actionable approach to reaching the organization’s vision. You will dive into the components of a strategic plan, explore analysis tools to inform your plan, and review sample strategic plans. This workshop will help you become more comfortable engaging in a strategic planning process that supports your organization’s continued growth.
Annual Conference
PIE Day
PIE day is our annual, half-day conference where we bring together funders, nonprofits, and changemakers to explore important topics in evaluation, capacity building and strategic planning. PIE Day offers a suite of presentations, small group discussions, and networking activities to support learning and dialogue across attendees.
